Mural Series a Project Rise/Sabertooth Public Art Partnership

Family Promise has been in collaboration with Akron Public Schools thru their Project Rise Program for many years. Project Rise assists Homeless students in Akron Public Schools. Project Rise provides many supports for students and families including:

·        Tutoring for students living in shelters

·        Transportation assistance to help students get to school

·        School Enrollment  assistance

·        Uniform referrals

There are approximately 1,800 Akron Public School students experiencing homelessness each year.

Living without permanent, long-term housing can have a profound effect on a child. Not only does schoolwork suffer, but homelessness can also cause developmental delays, learning difficulties, depression and anxiety. However, education is one key of breaking the cycle of poverty and homelessness.

Project Rise helps students experiencing homelessness stay in school and on track.

A collaboration among Akron public schools, local shelters and the community, Project Rise empowers students and families to improve the quality of their lives through educational, cultural and community support services and resources. Regardless of their living conditions, all children have the right to receive high-quality educational and social services in a safe and caring environment. Family Promise provides that environment.

Project Rise selected Family Promise of Summit County for their collaboration with Sabertooth Public Art. Beginning the week of July 8th, Sabertooth sent in a professional painter to prep and paint the lower-level walls of the Glendora House shelter. Once prepped, the team from Sabertooth Public Art came in and began painting the walls with a seasonal theme. The murals are interactive with color, shapes, animal, fruit and pattern recognition, counting initiatives, and other early childhood education topics. The explosion of color is adding an exciting atmosphere for the children and their families.
