Larry and his seventeen-year-old son, Michael, entered Family Promise after sleeping in a tent for several weeks. Larry and Michael had been at Family Promise twice before and it was clear this family needed a housing subsidy to sustain independent housing.
Larry suffered from several medical conditions that made it difficult to work. Michael had not been attending school regularly due to the lack of housing. The family was only able to salvage a couple bags of clothing after they were evicted from their last home. Once the family entered Family Promise, case managers prioritized getting Michael back in school. It was determined that Michael would do best in a non-traditional school setting and he would start working toward credit recovery.
Larry attempted to work at several jobs but his medical issues prevented him from being able to retain anything long-term. Larry felt helpless, discouraged and embarrassed by his inability to provide a stable environment for his teenage son. Larry often helped out with minor maintenance tasks at the shelter to keep himself occupied and to feel as if he was contributing to something.
Michael turned eighteen while in shelter and instead of celebrating like others might at this age, he immediately started looking for a job. Finally, the family received good news - they were going to be receiving a housing subsidy. For the first time, they would not have to worry about being evicted for not being to afford rent. Larry immediately became more enthusiastic and worked diligently to complete the tasks required for them to move. The process went fairly quick and after 41 days, the family was finally in a stable home!
Family Promise was able to help provide the family with some household essential items and made referrals for the family to start furnishing their home. The family continues to check in with case managers and is forever grateful for Family Promise.
